Practical advice to write better resumes, pass ATS screens, and interview with confidence.

What is an ATS and why it rejects resumes

Applicant Tracking Systems parse your PDF into text and rank keywords. Fancy columns, icons, and tables often break parsing.

  • Use standard section headings: Summary, Experience, Education, Skills.
  • Prefer .docx or simple PDF from a clean template (Cuvio CV Classic / Compact score best).
  • Mirror important keywords from the job description — naturally, not stuffed.
  • Avoid text inside images, headers-only contact info, and multi-column chaos for ATS-heavy companies.
  • Save a tailored version per job family (backend, frontend, sales, etc.).

How to write strong resume bullets

Every strong bullet = Action verb + what you did + measurable result.

  • Bad: Responsible for managing social media accounts.
  • Good: Grew Instagram engagement 45% in 6 months by testing 3 content formats weekly.
  • Include tools when relevant (SQL, Figma, Salesforce) — recruiters search for them.
  • Keep 3–5 bullets per recent role; 1–2 for older roles.
  • Cut fluff words: “various”, “multiple”, “helped with”.

Job search playbook (India-focused)

Combine referrals, niche job boards, and outbound applications with a tracking sheet.

  • Update Naukri / LinkedIn headline with target role + 2 skills.
  • Ask for referrals before cold apply — message alumni and ex-colleagues weekly.
  • Track every application: company, role, date, status, follow-up.
  • Prepare for aptitude + HR + technical rounds; many companies still use all three.
  • For freshers: GitHub/portfolio + 2 solid projects beat a long empty experience section.

Salary negotiation basics

Never give the first number if you can avoid it. Anchor with market data.

  • Research ranges on Levels.fyi, Glassdoor, AmbitionBox for your city and level.
  • When asked expectation: share a range based on market + your offer leverage.
  • Negotiate total compensation: base, variable, joining bonus, remote stipend, ESOP.
  • Get the offer in writing before resigning.
  • Be polite and firm — enthusiasm for the role + clarity on number.

LinkedIn profile that gets recruiters

Your LinkedIn is a living resume. Optimize headline, about, and featured.

  • Headline: Role | Specialty | Proof (e.g. Product Designer | SaaS | +28% activation).
  • About: short story + skills + CTA (open to roles in…).
  • Feature case studies or GitHub links.
  • Turn on Open to Work for recruiters (visibility control).
  • Comment thoughtfully on posts in your industry 3× a week.

Calm nerves and perform under pressure

Preparation reduces anxiety more than pep talks.

  • Practice out loud — reading silently is not enough.
  • Box breathing: inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4 — before you join the call.
  • It’s OK to say: “Let me take 10 seconds to structure that.”
  • If you blank: restate the question, then answer with STAR.
  • One bad answer rarely kills the interview — recover and continue.
